Geek Projects for the winter

by john on October 9th, 2006

This winter I have several geek related projects planned for my home (in no particular order)

1) Set up my XBOX as a MythTV frontend with XBOX Media Center
2) Run proper network connections throughout my house including a proper punchdown panel etc

As of October 19th I have most of the runs done but I ran out of CAT5E cable. Bought some more and just waiting for the keystones, cover plates, punchdown block, etc to arrive from mycableshop.ca.

3) Set up our small closet downstairs as a mini data center with the above punchdown panel, any servers, a UPS, etc
4) Set up a NAS box to centralize storage and easily configure backups for my network. I'm thinking I'll also use the NAS box to store OGG files and hopefully use the XBOX to stream my music collection through my stereo system
5) Move my desk from my office (SIGH!) so my son can use it as his bedroom. I'm gonna miss my office. So first thing is to figure out where the hell I'm moving my computer
6) Upgrade my MythTV box to the newer version. Why didn't they release the new version in the summer when it was repeat season?
7) If I have the $$ and time I may look at setting up a Asterisk box on my Vonage connection
