Going to do the BSDA Certification

by john on February 20th, 2010

I've decided to write the BSDA certification exam at LinuxFest Northwest at the end of April. I also need to renew one of my SANS certifications by the end of May. I must like stressing myself out.

I ordered and received the Winter 2010 BSDA Courseware DVD in the mail a couple of days ago. I know the materials are all available on the 'net for free but I like to support a good cause.

If you've done the BSDA exam, drop me a note if you have any recommended study methods, tips, tricks, etc.

  1. The BSDWiki is a great online help. The first time I took the test (yeah, I failed it once), there wasn’t a lot there, but since then it’s been beefed up quite a bit.

I was using FreeBSD at the time I was studying, but I had an old Dell tower that I used alternately to practice OpenBSD and NetBSD stuff. It helped doing that, because I didn’t know much about those distros at the time. Since then I’ve gotten to quite like OpenBSD.

Unless things have changed, the exam is geared toward sysadmins. X isn’t even tested. So even if you can’t get X going perfectly (I’m yet to get NetBSD and X to love each other), it’s not a problem. You can study everything you need to from the console.

Good luck, and thanks for supporting the BSDA.
